Lobularia
Best used in borders or small containers, this annual native to the Mediterranean region is a prolific bloomer and will grow almost anywhere during the summertime. Alyssum is a delicateannual with a delicate fragrance to match and is available in a variety of lovely colors to decorate your garden or patio. It is winter hardy in zones 4 through 9 and thrives in warm climates.

Alyssum is a relatively small plant with most varieties growing between 3 and 12 inches in height. It is compact, spreading (around 6-10 inches is a typical spread) and versatile enough to use in borders, baskets, rock gardens, and containers. Compact and trailing varieties are available, and the trailing varieties have made alyssum very popular in hanging baskets recently.

Alyssum is fast growing and has dense flowers, but an airy, elegant structure uncommon to compact bedding plants. Its foliage is attractive, but somewhat hidden beneath the showy flowers. Mixing colors is particularly striking because of the profusion of flowers on this small summer annual. The most popular shades of alyssum are pink, violet, white, yellow, and apricot.

Alyssum will bloom from early summer to early fall and is considered quite heat and drought tolerant. In extremely hot conditions, alyssum may stop blooming but will start up again as soon as the weather cools. Plant in full to part sun with well-drained soil for best results. However, alyssum is a low maintenance annual and will adapt to most conditions as long as it is not planted in deep shade or waterlogged soil.
