Ageratum

Ageratum houstonianum
Flowering from late Spring to early Fall in mild climates, ageratum is a great annual bedding plant that is mostly used in borders in the summertime. Also great in containers and rock gardens, ageratum is wonderful for adding color to your garden or patio, and it is an excellent plant for a beginner gardener as it’s easy to grow and produces lots of compact flower clusters all season long. Available in many varieties with different sizes and growth habits, ageratum has become quite versatile and dependable.

With fluffy, round flowers and heart or oval shaped, hairy leaves, ageratum is sometimes referred to as floss flower and is attractive to both butterflies and bees because of its colorful, fragrant blossoms. Bicolor varieties are available now, although the most popular flower colors are solid blue, purple, pink, or white.

Ageratum grows very quickly and can be up to 30 inches tall with a 12 inch spread. Compact varieties will reach only 6-8 inches tall, but always have an even growth pattern making them very appealing for containers and edgings.

Ageratum performs best in full sun unless you live in an especially hot or dry climate. Under those conditions, shade should be provided or plants will burn out since ageratum is not very drought tolerant.

Rich, moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil is ideal, and be sure to always water ageratum before the soil dries out to keep them looking their best. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering.
