| Angelonia angustifolia Angelonia, sometimes called the summer Snapdragon, is an easy to grow, beautiful annual that loves the heat. Blooming from early Summer to early Fall, Angelonia is a fast grower that will provide an abundance of blooms and last through the hot and humid weather of the Deep South. Mostly used in containers and baskets, Angelonia is versatile enough to be used as bedding plant as well, especially striking when planted in mass. Winter hardy in zones 9 to 11, Angelonia is making a name for itself in the nursery industry as a spectacular bedding annual in hot climates. Angelonia has a bushy, compact habit and pretty, slightly scented foliage that never seems to wilt. It grows vigorously and can be pinched back to create a bushier habit to your taste. It is a somewhat showy annual growing 6-24 inches in height with a 9-12 inch spread. Its flowers are about an inch in diameter and come in striking colors such as blue, purple, white, ink and bicolor. The flowers have a similar appearance to orchids and grow on upright, spiky, smooth stems. Angelonia is both heat and drought tolerant and appreciates a position that gets full sunshine. Although it is drought tolerant, excessive aridity will cause leaf tip burn so regular watering is recommended for best performance. Light and well drained soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5 is optimal, and soil should dry out slightly between watering. No deadheading is required as Angelonia drops it blooms and re-flowers every few weeks. | ![]() |
